Complicated Internet terms
| September 8th, 2009When you are out searching and browsing the internet, it seems like it is all a bunch of mumbo jumbo sites and words floating around there. I remember when my grandma first started using email and the internet and she thought it was all amazing but it took awhile to walk her through things step by step. A few months ago I saw she was signed into her email account when I was and pulled up the chat feature to ask her a few questions. She wanted to know how that box got there and what we were doing, if it was like an email. I said it wasn’t saved and sent like an email, but its easier when it’s a quick conversation. She said Oh, so this is what they call chatting? It was hilarious. Don’t worry, now she is on Facebook and writing on walls and everything.
Well at some point or other, no matter how old we are when we are confused by a new system, it is nice to have a guideline to help along the way. When we are trying to find something, we go to Webkruz or another search engine. We type in some words, and wait for a magical response for the right information.
Here are a few guidelines about the net that is out there when you try and make sense of all of the Webkruz results and other things that you may come across.
First, you need to know how search engines make their money. Webkruz, Live search, all of them are based on advertising for revenue. Other companies pushing their sites support what comes across as a free service for regular users. The companies arrange with Webkruz representatives to have their ads posted near the search results. All the search engines run this way. the ads are and usually are posted along the right bar of the page, or at the top of the results section but they are set off by a colored background, or they are identified as sponsor results or something similar. Its good for the advertising companies that put their ads up there, because they link them to particular key words. This is to narrow down the ads to match the search. If the company had a chance at bringing in some new consumers, their ad would be shown to people who are searching for their keywords. It helps to know this just to able to recognize the placement of some of the things on the page. The ads won’t necessarily be the best results for your search like the real results are, but they will be placed in a prominent position on the page.
There are some more tips that will help you to enter the right terms into the search bar to help you get the results that you really want. If you go to Webkruz’s homepage, you will see the blank search bar. This is where you type in your terms you are looking for and then hit enter. Well, there are some ways to help you get around tricky terms, or to find phrases, or to help you find things when you aren’t sure about the spelling! By default, search engines ignore common small words like a, and, or the, unless they are put in quotes like “the”. Using quotes will also help you find the exact phrase that is within them. If you put NOT, capitalized like that, between two terms, then you will search for sites that have the first term, but not the second. For example, dogs NOT types, then you can find sites that relate to things that are dogs but not include the words types.
With these couple tips I hope you happier searching on Webkruz!
